About Me:
Jason Richardson is a writer, photographer, videographer, marketer and musician. He has recorded albums under various pseudonyms, including bassling and ShowcaseJase; and released his first commercial recording in 2009.

Jason was first introduced to Alan Lamb and his work with 'the wires' through his collaboration with Scott Baker, a member of the Wagga Space Program. In 2004 Scott and Alan built two sets of wires at Pindari, the property outside Wagga Wagga where Jason lives with his collaborator Jo and their children. One set of wires remains on top of the hill.

In 2006 Alan returned to Pindari to work with Jason and Jo for the Wagga Space Program's Unsound festival, culminating in a performance broadcast from Pindari to the festival. Video of this performance can be found at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M4Yy4-Kxv_E

He admits it took him a while to 'get' the wires as an instrument but has found they encourage a number of beneficial behaviours for musicians, including close listening, a kind of meditative sense of being in the moment and an appreciation for how musical notes are cycles.

"I really enjoy hearing the low pulse build into a furious drone before a new pulse builds again or occasionally another will collide into it. Or the wind will still," explained Jason in a blog entry at http://showcasejase.blogspot.com/2007/12/aeolian-harp.html

Jason has used recordings of the wires in his music, both as an instrument and as a reverb effect. He has also used this large-scale aeolian harp as way of jamming with the wind and can sometimes be found with a guitar, drum kit or singing at the top of Pindari.

I don't think you can hear the vibrations that travel back and forth on the 8 foot windharp like they do with the long wires. With the 50 foot line you can clearly hear an "echo'" traveling along the length of the wire. When the wind blows across the wires at right angles, little curls of unstable air are created and sets the wires in motion. The sounds that are produced are always the harmonics of the fundamental frequency of the wire (Why? is a good question). Higher wind speed creates higher frequencies. To make stereo out a mono recording, I record two takes of equal time, one after the other. Then use one recording for the right channel and one for the left. Add a blend of both to each channel so the stereo effect is not too harsh. The result is a wonderful sounding effect. Like two windharps playing in concert.

I adjust the tension on the wires by tightening the eyebolts. The pitch is equal on all four strings. Changes in temperature and humidity will change the tune over time. I also use a instrument tuner to check pitch from time to time. I just added a 50 foot wire stretched from the shed to a support to try out. I'm starting to get nice sounds and am waiting for a strong wind to blow.

PIEZOELECTRIC BIMORPH ELEMENT CONVERTS MECHANICAL VIBRATION INTO ELECTRIC SIGNAL (RS PART NUM 285-784) @ 5$

ATTACHED TO WIRE BY DOUBLE SIDED TAPE

SOLDER CONNECTIONS ARE ENCASED IN WATERPROOF SEALANT (e.g. SELLEYS ALL CLEAR MULTIPURPOSE CO-POLYMER SEALANT. USED FOR SEALING BATHROOMS / ROOFS ETC

PIEZO PICKUP TIP IS GLUED TO THE WIRE. WE USE SELLEYS KWIK GRIP CONTACT ADHESIVE

OUR PIEZO PICKUPS HAVE BEEN RUNNING SINCE APRIL 2008

BEST POSITIONED AWAY FROM THE POLES. CHOOSE LOCATION CAREFULLY. WE AIM FOR ABOUT +/- 45 DEGREES FROM VERTICAL

OFTEN REQUIRE THE WIRE TO BE EARTHED (& SOMETIMES THIS EARTH NEEDS CONNECTING TO RECORDING DEVICES EARTH). WE EARTH CENTRALLY BETWEEN THE PICKUPS

GUITAR PICKUPS

VERY QUICK & SIMPLE METHOD, CAN BE FIXED OR MOVEABLE. WE TRIED THIS FOR THE FIRST TIME THIS RESIDENCY
